Philadelphia, PA, April 20, 2020 — As manufacturers look for new ways to reduce cycle times and maximize output without sacrificing quality, many are choosing electrochemical grinding (ECG).

Electrochemical grinding provides an excellent alternative to wire EDM, abrasive cutting saws, or laser cutting by providing a fast, clean, and high-quality cut. Other processes risk the potential of exposing the material to high heat which can cause heat affected zones, recast, and slag. A secondary process to deburr the parts and remove any surface debris is required which leads to decreased productivity.

“ECG improves production times by eliminating the need for secondary processes such as deburring, wire brushing, and tumbling,” explained Tom Travia, Director of Business Development at Glebar Company. “The electrochemical reaction dissolves the metal surface in conjunction with mechanical abrasive grinding to provide faster cycle times and exponentially longer wheel life over conventional grinding.”

Almost all metals can be cut burr free while maintaining tight tolerances on complex grinds in high production environments. This makes ECG an attractive option for the medical, aerospace, chromatography, tube fabrication, and automotive industries. ECG can cut delicate and fragile honeycomb structures used in aircraft engines and in the power turbine industry.

Tridex Technology, a Glebar Company, is a leader in providing electrochemical grinding solutions to manufacturing companies. Their CS1-E ECG Cutoff, SG-1645 and SG2060 ECG Surface Grinders cut at low temperatures producing no heat affected zones or work hardening of the material producing a high quality, burr-free cut. Their PGS-100 Point Grinding System can be added to the ECG surface grinders to aid in the manufacturing of a variety of medical device points on tubing or solid wire using ECG technology.
